Set up in 2001, the .NAME domain name extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level domain names remained operational.
